Job Description

The Lead Software Engineer will join Royal London’s Digital team, leading the Identity and Access Management application delivery team within a cross functional environment.

This is a hands on technical leadership role focused on designing, building and operating modern customer facing and internal digital services. You will lead the design and development of complex systems using C#/.NET and Azure, ensuring both functional and non functional requirements are met while maintaining high standards across security, resilience and application quality.

You will take responsibility for technical design and impact assessments, ensuring appropriate designs and documentation are in place ahead of delivery. Working closely with architects, testers, product owners, analysts and other stakeholders, you will help deliver high quality outcomes while supporting the day to day operation of live applications and resolving complex production issues.

As a technical leader, you will champion engineering best practice, including clean code, automated testing and observability. You will mentor and develop other engineers, contribute to a strong engineering culture and support the continued development of software engineering practices across Royal London. 

Essential Selection Criteria

A strong software engineering background with experience leading delivery across the full application development lifecycle is essential. Candidates should have proven experience designing, building and maintaining modern web applications, with strong expertise in C#/.NET.

Knowledge of Identity and Access Management architecture, implementation and support is essential, together with knowledge of OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, JWT and secure token based integration patterns.

Strong experience building and operating applications in Azure cloud environments is required, alongside a good understanding of API driven and service based architecture and experience using CI/CD pipelines.

Candidates should have a strong focus on application quality, including testing, performance, security, resilience and operational readiness. You should be confident working autonomously and making technical decisions with limited supervision, with previous experience acting as a technical lead and mentoring engineers at different career stages.

Strong communication skills are required, including the ability to communicate effectively with non technical stakeholders and investigate, troubleshoot and resolve complex production issues.

**Desirable Selection Criteria**
Experience with Angular or similar front end frameworks would be advantageous, alongside experience with Azure services such as App Services, Functions, Storage, Key Vault and Application Insights.

Experience with API Management, including Azure APIM, would also be beneficial, as would exposure to mobile application development or supporting mobile applications through backend services. Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code, such as Bicep or Terraform, is also desirable.
